The Dark Side of Animal Rescue…
Factory farming is fueled by an ever growing demand for cheap meat. Factory farms place sensitive animals at the center of a cruel system designed to maximize profits, and animals are raised to become products as swiftly as possible. From birth to an early death, the conditions in which these animals exist is inhumane, causing both physical and mental harm.

It’s important to note that small-scale “humane” and “farm to table” farming does not ensure it's cruelty free. It’s not uncommon for "backyard farms" to be shut down by the USDA for animal abuse.
A growing trend in backyard farms has led to an increase in farm animal cruelty cases. With small scale farming, many people find themselves in over their heads; the animals are often malnourished and require medical treatment. This places an even greater burden on those who rescue them.

The Best way to HELP!
Shifting to a plant-based diet mitigates animal suffering, depletion of
natural resources and damage to the earth's environmental health.
Note from the Director: Why This Film?
While shooting my prior film, The Last Pig, we captured the story of eight young pigs who were saved from slaughter. I was deeply moved by the sanctuaries that rescued them.
A year later, Paul and Lenore attended a screening of The Last Pig. After the film, Paul told me about their refuge and his “animal-centered design.” I fell in love! I immediately envisioned a film about his beautiful architecture and their work to meet the needs of each individual animal they rescue.

We began shooting Beyond the Farm pre-pandemic, with good intentions but no funding. With a bit of help from an angel, we were able to film again in September. We now have three shoots under our belt and are on the final leg of production. The Refuge has just completed construction on the cow “house,” the first cows have arrived, and now we’re busy raising funds for our final shoot and post production.
